Running a Low End VPS

A common issue when running low capacity Virtual Private Servers, is running out of memory. One of the first indications of low available memory is a sudden series of segmentation faults (aka: segfaults). Segfaulting is a common occurrence when running out of available RAM inside your VPS.

Managed And Unmanaged Services

Before buying or renting your servers, you need to weigh the benefits of either choice, and make a decision on how to handle your IT Infrastructure. This process requires some planning.

One of the most common difficulties in rationalizing the value of managed services, is undervaluing the time and cost of keeping your server up and running. Sure the server itself is relatively inexpensive but ongoing “hidden” costs will easily exceed its initial purchase price:

  • Housing and Protecting
  • Monitoring and Tracking
  • Responding and Repairing
  • Preventative Measures

Once you understand the hidden costs, you'll be equipped to determine which service is right for you.

Busy Months

The economy must be slumbering back to speed, because workloads continue to increase…hence the blog's silence. In just the past two months, TOCICI has taken on a variety of new customers and continues to upgrade & expand systems:

  • More than doubled online datacenter capacity, with even more equipment pending installation.
  • Now hosting three Google Health connected applications
  • Installed WatchGuard brand network security equipment
  • Establishing online storefronts; completing the deployment of one new store in under an hour's time
  • Added onsite and online credit card processing
  • Continue to improve a comprehensive billing, account management, and documentation system

One of TOCICI's hallmarks has been the implementation of a comprehensive documentation and project management website; enabling a comprehensive inventory, project, documentation and billing system, all integrated into a single consistent interface. From the mouth's of customers; the ”…impressive…”, frequently updated, information-packed customer specific sites have proven ”…clean and easy to navigate…”.

SysAdmin Day

Tomorrow, July 31st, is System Administrator Appreciation Day!

System Administrator Appreciation Day, also known as Sysadmin Day, SysAdminDay or SAAD, was created by system administrator Ted Kekatos. The holiday exists to show appreciation for the work of sysadmins and other IT workers. It is celebrated on the last Friday in July. The first System Administrator Appreciation Day was celebrated on July 28, 2000. The next holiday is Friday, July 31, 2009.

The day has been recognized and promoted by two professional organizations, the League of Professional System Administrators and SAGE/USENIX.

Let's face it, without your friendly SysAdmin, you wouldn't even be able see this page, or read or send email. They are the person who brings you new stuff, like a new laptop, or a new LCD screen. If they don't bring you gifts like these, it's usually not their fault; someone is preventing them from doing it! Sysadmins love to give out nice new shiny things, because they know new computers are usually much more reliable! So, what gift are you buying for your SysAdmin this year? Remember, it's the thought that counts!

Remember, well-managed systems keep you from wanting to do this to your computer. How well managed are your systems?
